Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was the founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a great educationist, politician, and thinker.

He was very sharp and intelligent. Therefore he held the post of Industries and Supplies Minister in the Jawaharlal Nehru Central Government. He formed the Bharatiya Jan Sangh Party which was later upgraded as Bharatiya Janata Party in 1951.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Childhood and family 

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was born in Calcutta on 6 July 1901 in a Bengali family. Calcutta was under the British at that time. He belongs to the Kayastha Bengali family. His mother’s name is Jogamaya Devi Mukherjee and his father’s name is Ashutosh Mukherjee. His father Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee was the vice-chancellor of Calcutta University and was also a judge of the Calcutta High Court. His mother Jogayama Devi was a housewife.

They lived with a joint family. He had three brothers and three sisters in his family. The names of his brothers and sisters are as follows:-

Rama Prasad Mukherjee: He was born in 1896. He studied from Calcutta itself. He became a judge of the Calcutta High Court just like his father.
Uma Prasad Mukherjee: He was born in 1902. He was also a travel writer while watching agricultural work.
Bama Prasad Mukherjee: He was born in 1906. He was a lawyer of a high court.

Kamla Mukherjee: She is the eldest of all the brothers. She was born in 1895.

Amla Mukherjee:- She was born in 1905.
Ramala Mukherjee:- She was born in 1908.

He was married to Sudha Devi Mukherjee on 16 April 1922 at the age of 22. Sudha Devi was also a housewife with good behavior. Sudha gave birth to two sons and two daughters. Anutosh and Debatosh are sons and Sabita and Arati are his daughters.

His father belonged to a respected family in Calcutta. He was a judge of the Calcutta High Court and also the founder and vice-chancellor of Calcutta University.

His wife Sudha Devi died of diphtheria disease in the year 1934. Therefore after her accidental death, her sister took over the responsibility of raising their children. After the death his wife died in a short time, he denies to re-marry another wedding.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Education

Education is considered the mainstay of life in his family. Therefore, his education started from Bhawanipur in south Kolkata district from 1906. He started primary education at Mitra Institute. He later passed the matriculation examination in 1914.

After passing the matriculation examination, he enrolled in the Presidency College. He passed the inter exam in 1916 with very good marks and enrolled in English for graduation. Bachelor’s degree in English subject in 1921 and studied MA in the Bengali language. He is a very popular student in his class.

He completed the Master of Arts examination in first class. After that, he decided to become an advocate, and in 1924 he completes graduation in Bachelor of Laws degree. After completing his studies of advocacy, he started working in the Calcutta High Court as an advocate.

He became very sad after his father’s sudden death in 1927. At the time of his father’s death, his age was only 23 years old. He went to England in 1926 to study barrister. He went to England and attended Lincoln Inn College. After completing his barrister’s studies, he returned to India in 1927 and became a member of the English Bar Association.

In 1934, at the age of 33, he selected for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. For the first time, the University of Calcutta got the youngest Vice-Chancellor. They achieved everything very quickly. And he held the charge for four years till 1938.

During his tenure of vice-Chancellor, the Vishwaguru poet Ravindranath Tagore gave his first speech at a convocation ceremony in the Bengali language. And Hindi language was presented as a topmost language of all highest examination.

Seeing its merit and quality, the Senate of Calcutta University awarded him D.Litt on 10 September 1938.

Politics career before Independence

Prior to India’s independence, Mukherjee entered politics in 1929 as a candidate for the Congress Party. But he resigned the next year due to the boycott of the Congress legislature. He then contested as an independent candidate in 1937 on a Krishak Praja Party ticket and emerged victoriously.

In them, the spirit of service to the country was filled with the code. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 20 November 1942. Because of the severe floods in Midnapore, there was a loss of life and property which was prevented from going there.

After his resignation, he gathered support and organized relief with the help of Mahabodhi Society, Ramakrishna Mission, and Marwari Relief Society. In 1946, he was again elected as an independent candidate from the University of Calcutta. He was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly of India in the same year.

Become Leader of Hindu Mahasabha

Mukherjee took membership of Bengal Hindu Mahasabha in 1939. He was made acting president in 1940 by the party command. In view of his work, he was made a member of the All India Hindu Mahasabha in 1943.

Politics career after Independence

India got independent on 15 August 1947. He was given the post of Minister of Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. But they did not agree with some decisions taken by the central government. As a result, he resigned from his post.

After boycott from the Congress party, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh Party on 21 October 1951, after taking the advice of many political experts. And became the first member of this party. In 1952 Lok Sabha elections, his party contested and won 3 seats. The main objective of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh Party was to build the nation.

370 article and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee

When India was partitioned; Jammu and Kashmir were given the status of a separate state. Mukherji was strongly against it. But Nehru did not listen to him. And at the same time, their flag will be different and there will be 370 articles, there will be a separate constitution. No Indian could buy land there. He always held Nehru responsible for all this.

But the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah 6 August 2019 370 and 35A both articles removed from Jammu And Kashmir State. And the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir was abolished and made a union territories region.


Jammu and Kashmir anyone could not go without permission. But Shyama Prasad Mukherjee went away without taking permission from the Indian Government on 11 May 1953. But as soon as he reached Srinagar, he was arrested and put in Central Jail.

After a few days, he was shifted to a cottage outside the city. Due to the high temperature, he started to paint back and mind a lot. And the condition started deteriorating. The doctor was undergoing treatment but there was no cure.

On 22 June 1953, his heart started to ache and he fainted. And thus came the news on 23 June 1953 that he died of a heart attack.

The reason for his death remains a mystery even today. The secret does not reveal from this suspense to date. His mother demanded an inquiry from Jawaharlal Nehru but to no avail. But some people believe in murdered cases, not a natural death.


Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was a promising and honest leader of the country. He used to see all religions with one vision. He sacrificed his entire life for the good of the country. The country pays homage to them.

  • 1937 He was elected as an independent candidate.
  • 1938 He held the office until. During the period Ravindranath Tagore addressed in Bengali at University first time.
  • 1938 He got the degree D.Litt from the Kolkata University on 26 November.
  • 1939 He joined Hindu Mahasabha in Bengal.
  • 1941 He served as a finance minister of Bengal province.
  • 1943 He was elected as president of Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha.
  • 1946 He demands the partition of Bengal.
  • 1947 He becomes Minister of Industry and supply in Jawaharlal Nehru cabinet.
  • 1950 He quit from Nehru’s cabinet on 8 April.
  • 1951 He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh [BJS]on 21 October in Delhi.
  • 1952 BJS won three seats on the general election.
  • 1953 He was arrested at Lakhanpur while crossing the border of Kashmir on 11 May.
  • 1953 Died in hospital on 23 June by a heart attack.
